Car Won't Start: Step-By-Step Troubleshooting Guide

A car that won't start has a finite set of possible causes, and the symptom pattern usually narrows it down quickly. Here is the diagnostic ladder we use, from most common to least, with what each fix typically costs.

Diagnostic Question 1: What Does It Do When You Turn the Key?

Nothing at all: dead battery, bad connection, or ignition switch failure. Click but no crank: low battery, bad starter, or connection issue. Cranks but does not start: fuel, spark, or compression issue. Cranks slowly: weak battery or weak starter.

Cause 1: Dead or Failing Battery (Most Common)

Most no-start situations are battery related. A 4 to 5 year old battery in Simi Valley heat can fail without much warning. Symptoms range from "no dash lights" (completely dead) to "cranks slowly then dies" (very low).

Diagnostic: voltage check. Healthy battery rests at 12.6V; below 12.4V indicates discharge. Load test confirms whether the battery can hold voltage under cranking demand.

Fix: battery replacement, $180 to $280 for most vehicles. Premium AGM batteries for vehicles with start-stop systems run $280 to $380.

Cause 2: Corroded Battery Cables or Loose Connections

White or green corrosion on battery terminals creates resistance. Even a small voltage drop across a corroded terminal can prevent the starter from getting enough current to crank.

Diagnostic: visual inspection, voltage drop test across cables and terminals.

Fix: clean terminals and tighten connections. If cables are corroded internally (rare), cable replacement. $45 to $180.

Cause 3: Failing Starter Motor

Starters wear with use. After 100,000+ cycles, brushes wear and contact resistance increases. Symptoms include clicking with no crank, intermittent cranking, slow cranking with a healthy battery.

Diagnostic: voltage test at starter, current draw test, sometimes direct starter activation with a jumper.

Fix: starter replacement, $320 to $550 most vehicles, higher on some European where access is difficult.

Cause 4: Alternator Failure

If the alternator fails while you are driving, the battery slowly drains. Eventually the car will not start. Symptoms include battery warning light, dimming headlights, electrical accessories acting up before the no-start.

Diagnostic: alternator output test, voltage measurement at the battery with engine running (should be 13.8 to 14.5V).

Fix: alternator replacement, $380 to $620.

Cause 5: Ignition Switch Failure

Less common but distinctive. Key turns but no response from the car. Sometimes intermittent (car starts sometimes but not others). On push-button start vehicles, button push produces nothing.

Fix: ignition switch replacement, $220 to $450 for keyed vehicles. Push-button systems involve different diagnostic.

Cause 6: Fuel Delivery Problem

If the car cranks but does not start, fuel could be the issue. Failed fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, bad fuel injector, or relay/fuse problem affecting the fuel system.

Diagnostic: fuel pressure test at the rail, fuel pump activation test, listen for pump prime when key is turned to "on" position.

Fix: fuel pump replacement $580 to $980 most vehicles, filter $120 to $280, injectors $180 to $320 each.

Cause 7: No Spark (Ignition System)

Cranks but does not start, no fuel issue. Could be failed ignition coil(s), failed crank position sensor, or bad ignition module.

Diagnostic: spark test at plug, sensor signal test.

Fix: coil replacement $120 to $260 per coil, crank sensor $180 to $340, ignition module varies.

Cause 8: Security System Lock-Out

Most modern vehicles have an immobilizer that prevents starting if the key is not recognized. Dead key fob battery, weak transponder signal, or programming issue can lock you out.

Fix: fob battery replacement (DIY $5), or key re-programming at a dealer or specialty locksmith $80 to $180.

Cause 9: Wet or Flooded Engine

If the car has been off-road through deep water or has flooded, water can be in cylinders. Cranking with water in cylinders is bad. If the car cranks slowly and you smell gas, do not keep cranking; pull plugs and inspect.

Fix: variable. From simple drying out to engine replacement if hydrolocked.

Cause 10: Crank Position Sensor Failure

A failed crank position sensor causes a no-spark, no-start condition. The engine cranks but the computer cannot determine crankshaft position, so it does not fire injectors or spark.

Fix: crank sensor replacement, $180 to $340 including labor.

What To Do When It Won't Start

Try a jump first. If a jump works, drive to us or another shop to test battery and alternator (a battery that takes a jump but won't start later is dying). If a jump does not help, look for warning lights, listen for the fuel pump prime, and try to characterize the symptom (no crank, slow crank, crank-no-start).

Frequently Asked Questions

My car clicks when I turn the key but doesn't start. What is it?

Most commonly a dead or weak battery, or a corroded terminal preventing enough current to the starter. Less commonly a starter solenoid issue. Start with a battery test.

Can a bad alternator cause a no-start?

Yes, indirectly. A failing alternator slowly drains the battery as you drive. Eventually the battery is too low to start. The fix is alternator replacement plus battery testing (often replacement needed too).

How can I tell if I need a starter or battery?

Battery: dim or no dash lights, slow crank, complete failure to crank. Starter: dash lights normal, click but no crank, very slow crank with a known-good battery. Voltage test confirms the battery is healthy; if it is, suspect the starter.

My key fob does not work. Will the car still start?

Most modern cars require the fob signal to start. A dead fob battery (cheap fix) can prevent starting. Many vehicles have a backup method (holding the fob against the steering column) for dead-fob situations.

Is it expensive to diagnose a no-start?
