Prepaid Maintenance vs Pay-As-You-Go: Which Saves More

Service planning at Perry's Quality Auto in Simi Valley

When you buy a new car, the dealer often offers a prepaid maintenance package covering scheduled service for a fixed period. The pitch is convenience and savings. The reality varies. Here is an honest look at when prepaid maintenance saves money and when paying per visit at an independent shop is the better deal.

What Prepaid Maintenance Actually Covers

Most prepaid packages cover scheduled oil changes, tire rotations, multi-point inspections, and sometimes air filter replacement. The coverage period is usually 2 to 5 years or 25,000 to 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

What is typically NOT covered: brake pads, brake rotors, cabin air filters in some packages, fluid flushes beyond a single coolant flush, spark plugs, timing belts, struts, or any repair work. Anything not scheduled maintenance is out of pocket.

Typical Dealer Package Cost

Dealer prepaid packages typically run $600 to $1,800 depending on the make and the length. For a Honda or Toyota, $700 to $1,200 is common for 3 years or 30,000 miles. For a BMW, Audi, or Mercedes, $1,400 to $2,400 for 4 years or 50,000 miles is common.

Some manufacturers include the first 2 years or 25,000 miles of maintenance free with new car purchase. After that period, the dealer offers a prepaid extension.

What the Math Actually Looks Like

For a Honda Civic, the dealer might charge $90 per oil change with tire rotation. Three years of service at 7,500 mile intervals over 30,000 miles is four oil changes plus tire rotations, plus one cabin filter, plus one air filter. Total dealer cost would be $440 to $480.

If the prepaid package costs $700, you are paying $220 to $260 more than the per-visit price for the same service. The dealer is making margin on the package.

The same service at Perry's would be $260 to $320 for the four oil changes and rotations, plus $80 for filters. Total $340 to $400. Significantly less than either the per-visit dealer price or the prepaid package.

When Prepaid Makes Sense

If you negotiate hard during car purchase and get the package thrown in at low cost. We have seen drivers add a prepaid package for $200 to $400 instead of paying full retail. At that price, the package is competitive with independent shop pricing.

If you drive significantly more miles than average and will use all the service intervals in the package, the per-visit cost in the package drops.

If you would otherwise skip maintenance due to budget concerns. A prepaid package guarantees the service happens, which protects the engine and the resale value.

When Pay-As-You-Go Wins

If you bought the car used and the package is no longer available, pay-as-you-go is your only option. Most prepaid packages are tied to the original purchase.

If you have a reputable independent shop you trust. Our pricing is typically 20 to 40 percent below dealer pricing for the same service quality, sometimes more. Over 3 to 5 years, that savings adds up.

If your driving mileage is below average. A 3-year package with 4 oil changes assumed becomes a worse value if you only use 2 of them.

If you want flexibility on what service is done. Pay-as-you-go means you can adjust intervals based on your actual driving, skip optional services, or add diagnostic work as needed.

Dealer Service vs Independent Shop

Dealer service has access to manufacturer technical service bulletins, factory training, and software updates. For vehicles under warranty, going to the dealer for warranty work is required. For routine maintenance, the dealer's higher labor rates and parts markups make it more expensive without delivering proportionally more value.

A quality independent shop has access to most of the same technical information through paid subscriptions (we subscribe to multiple). Our ASE Certified technicians have the same training credentials as dealer technicians. Our equipment and software handle factory-level diagnostics on most vehicles. We use OEM-quality parts and follow factory procedures.

The differences that remain: we cannot do warranty work funded by the manufacturer (which goes to the dealer free of charge to you), and we cannot perform certain software flashes that require dealer-level access. Beyond those exceptions, we deliver dealer-quality service at independent shop pricing.

What We Recommend

If you are buying a new car and the dealer offers prepaid at low cost (negotiated down to $300 or less for 3 years), take it. Use it for the routine service it covers.

If the prepaid package costs $700 or more for typical coverage, decline and use an independent shop for routine maintenance. The savings will exceed the package price within the same period.

For repair work and anything beyond scheduled maintenance, use an independent shop you trust. The savings over dealer pricing for the same work are substantial.

How We Help Plan Service

At Perry's, we keep a record of every service done on your vehicle. We send reminders for upcoming intervals based on your driving and your manufacturer's recommendations. You pay only for what you need, when you need it, and you see itemized pricing before any work begins.

We also stand by every service with our 2-Year/24,000-Mile warranty on parts and labor. The dealer warranty period on routine maintenance is typically much shorter.
