Spark Plug Replacement Cost: What Different Vehicles Cost

Spark plug service at Perry's Quality Auto in Simi Valley

Spark plug replacement is one of the most variable maintenance jobs in cost. On a four-cylinder car with easy access, it is a quick service. On a V6 with the rear bank under an intake manifold, or on certain Fords with two-piece plugs that break on removal, it can be a half-day job. Here is what to expect for your vehicle.

Cost by Engine Type

For a four-cylinder vehicle with easy plug access (most Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Mazda, Subaru four-cylinders), expect $80 to $180 for the service, including plugs and labor. Iridium plugs cost more than copper, but last longer.

For a V6 transverse engine (typical of front-wheel drive minivans, sedans, and crossovers), expect $200 to $380. The rear bank of cylinders is hard to access and may require partial intake removal. Honda Pilot, Toyota Sienna, Hyundai Santa Fe, and many similar designs fall here.

For a V8 truck or SUV engine, expect $180 to $320 for the service. Access is generally easier than V6 transverse layouts because the engine is mounted longitudinally.

For European turbocharged engines (BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, MINI), expect $280 to $480. These engines often use specialty plugs (laser-welded, double-platinum, or iridium-tipped) at $20 to $40 per plug, and access can be tight especially around turbos.

Spark Plug Types and Lifespan

Copper plugs are the cheapest, $2 to $4 per plug, but only last 20,000 to 30,000 miles. They are appropriate for older vehicles that specified them originally and are rarely used today.

Platinum plugs last 60,000 to 100,000 miles and cost $5 to $12 per plug. Single platinum is common in older vehicles. Double platinum is found in waste-spark ignition systems and lasts longer.

Iridium plugs are the modern standard, lasting 80,000 to 120,000 miles. They cost $10 to $25 per plug. Most vehicles built after 2010 specify iridium from the factory.

Laser-welded or specialty plugs found on some European turbocharged engines cost $25 to $50 per plug and follow specific intervals from the manufacturer, often 60,000 to 80,000 miles.

Why You Should Stick to OEM Spec

The plug type and heat range matter. Using a copper plug where iridium was specified means you will be back in 25,000 miles. Using the wrong heat range causes pre-ignition or fouling. We always use OEM-spec or OEM plugs and confirm the part number against the vehicle's exact engine code, not just year and model.

Symptoms of Worn Spark Plugs

Misfires under acceleration, rough idle, drop in fuel economy, hard starts especially when cold, and a check engine light with cylinder-specific misfire codes (P0301 through P0308 typically) all suggest plug wear. A scan tool tells us which cylinder, and we inspect the plug from that cylinder first to confirm.

Sometimes the symptom is a coil pack failure rather than a plug, but the plug is checked first because it is cheap and informative. A burned or fouled plug from one cylinder tells us a lot about the condition of that cylinder.

What Else Gets Inspected During the Service

When the plugs are out, we inspect the coil packs or ignition wires, the boots and plug well seals, and the condition of the cylinder threads. We check for oil contamination in the plug wells (a sign of leaking valve cover gaskets, common on many engines). We look at each plug to read the cylinder condition: a fouled plug, an oily plug, or a white-tipped plug each tells a different story about cylinder health.

This inspection is included free with any spark plug service. If we find a related issue, we tell you about it before doing additional work.

Intervals to Schedule Service

Iridium plugs at 100,000 miles. Platinum plugs at 60,000 to 80,000 miles. Specialty European plugs at the manufacturer's specified interval (often 60,000 miles on direct-injection turbocharged engines). If your vehicle is past the interval and has not had plugs done, schedule the service.

Drivers who tow, drive in stop-and-go traffic, or run short trips (engine never fully warms) should consider the lower end of the interval range.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does spark plug replacement cost in Simi Valley?

$80 to $480 depending on engine layout and plug type. Four-cylinders are cheapest, V6 transverse engines and European turbos are most expensive.

How often should I replace spark plugs?

Iridium plugs every 100,000 miles, platinum every 60,000 to 80,000 miles, specialty European plugs per manufacturer interval.

Can I use a cheaper spark plug?

Stick with OEM-spec. Using cheaper plugs means replacing them more often and risking misfires or damage.

How long does spark plug replacement take?

Four-cylinders are typically one hour. V6 transverse engines and Euros take two to four hours.

Do you warranty spark plug replacement?

Every spark plug service includes our 2-Year/24,000-Mile warranty.
