Honda Civic Maintenance Schedule: What to Service & When

Honda Civic Maintenance Schedule: What to Service & When

The Honda Civic is famously bulletproof, but only if you actually maintain it. Here's the complete schedule with model-specific notes for every Civic generation.

The Honda Civic has been earning its reliability reputation for decades. With proper maintenance, Civics regularly hit 250,000-300,000+ miles. With neglected maintenance, they can fail expensively, particularly the modern turbocharged 1.5L and the older Civic Hybrid IMA system.

This is a comprehensive maintenance schedule covering Honda Civics from 2006 onward. We'll note generation-specific items where they matter.

Civic Generations Quick Reference

  • FA/FG (2006-2011): 1.8L SOHC i-VTEC. Bulletproof.
  • FB (2012-2015): 1.8L i-VTEC. Some 9th-gen torque converter issues.
  • FC (2016-2021): 2.0L NA or 1.5L turbo. Direct injection introduces new concerns.
  • FE/FL (2022+): Refined 2.0L NA or 1.5L turbo. More polished but similar maintenance to FC.

Every Oil Change (5,000-7,500 Miles)

Honda's Maintenance Minder System tells you when to change oil based on actual driving conditions, often stretching to 7,500-10,000 miles. In Simi Valley severe service, we recommend 5,000-7,500 miles regardless of what the Maintenance Minder says.

  • Synthetic oil and filter, $60-$95 (0W-20 for most modern Civics)
  • Tire rotation, $30 or free with oil change
  • Brake inspection
  • Fluid checks
  • Air filter inspection

Critical for 2016+ 1.5L Turbo Civics: Watch your oil level monthly. The 1.5L turbo has a known issue with fuel dilution, gasoline mixing into the oil during cold-weather short-trip driving. Oil levels can actually rise above the dipstick max line. If you notice this, it's a sign the fuel dilution is excessive and the oil should be changed even if the Maintenance Minder hasn't called for it.

30,000 Miles

  • Engine air filter, $25-$45
  • Cabin air filter, $20-$40
  • Brake fluid flush, $90-$140
  • Tire alignment check, $90-$130

60,000 Miles, The Big One

  • Spark plugs, $150-$280. Honda's iridium plugs are rated 100,000 miles, but turbo Civics benefit from earlier replacement (60,000-80,000 miles).
  • Transmission fluid service (CVT), $180-$280. Civic CVTs (in 2014+ models) MUST have regular fluid service. Honda recommends every 25,000-30,000 miles for CVT fluid in severe service. If you've never had it done, do it now.
  • Coolant flush, $130-$190. Honda Type 2 coolant only, never substitute regular green or universal coolant.
  • Brake pads (front), $250-$400 if needed.
  • Drive belt, $80-$140 if showing wear.
  • Battery, $160-$260 if load-test fails.

1.5L Turbo: Walnut Blasting (60,000-100,000 miles)

Like the Ford EcoBoost engines, the Honda 1.5L direct-injection turbo develops intake valve carbon deposits. Symptoms include hesitation, rough idle, and misfires (P0301-P0304 codes). Walnut blasting service runs $400-$650 and resolves the issue. Plan for it once between 60,000-100,000 miles, depending on driving habits.

90,000 Miles

  • Engine and cabin air filters, second replacement
  • Tire alignment, same as 30K
  • Brake pads (rear), $280-$420 if needed
  • Suspension inspection, by 90,000 miles, struts/shocks often show wear

100,000-105,000 Miles

  • Spark plugs, if not done at 60K
  • Coolant flush, if not done at 60K
  • CVT transmission service, at minimum if not done
  • Oxygen sensors, Plan for replacement, especially upstream sensor
  • PCV valve, $25-$50

CVT Service Is Critical

If there's one thing that determines how long a 2014+ Civic will last, it's CVT maintenance. The CVT (continuously variable transmission) is sensitive to fluid quality and contamination. Honda recommends Honda HCF-2 fluid only, never universal CVT fluids.

Symptoms of CVT trouble include:

  • Shudder or judder when accelerating from a stop
  • Whining noise that changes with vehicle speed
  • Hesitation when applying throttle
  • Slipping under load

If any of these appear, get the fluid serviced immediately. Replacement CVTs run $4,000-$7,000+, preventing failure with $300 fluid services every 30,000 miles is overwhelmingly worth it.

120,000-150,000 Miles

  • Struts and shocks, $500-$1,000 for full set
  • Wheel bearings, listen for humming. $300-$500 per bearing.
  • Engine mounts, Civic mounts are known for premature failure on some generations. Symptoms include vibration at idle and clunking when shifting between drive and reverse.
  • Lower control arm bushings, Often need attention here. $200-$400 per side.
  • Brake calipers, Sometimes require service after years of heat cycling.

Civic-Specific Issues by Generation

2006-2011 (8th Gen)

Generally bulletproof, but watch for:

  • Power steering fluid leaks (rack and high-pressure hose)
  • AC compressor clutch failure around 100,000-120,000 miles
  • Cracked exhaust manifolds (1.8L SOHC), typical fix is $500-$900

2012-2015 (9th Gen)

  • Some Civic Si models have differential bearing issues
  • Lower control arm bushings wear by 80,000 miles
  • Otherwise very reliable

2016-2021 (10th Gen)

  • 1.5L turbo fuel dilution issue, monitor oil level closely
  • Carbon buildup on intake valves (DI engines)
  • Some early CVT issues, mostly resolved with fluid service
  • Air conditioning condenser failures common

2022+ (11th Gen)

  • Too new for long-term issue patterns to emerge
  • Same DI carbon buildup concern as 10th gen
  • Watch for CVT fluid maintenance even on the new e:HEV hybrid

Why Civics Are Worth Maintaining Long-Term

Even at 200,000+ miles, a well-maintained Civic is often worth more than a poorly-maintained car half its age. Resale values stay strong. Repair costs are modest. Parts are widely available. And when you do need to sell or trade in, the documentation of regular maintenance is what separates a $4,000 sale from a $7,000 sale.
