Ford F-150 trucks regularly hit 200,000+ miles when properly maintained. Here's the complete schedule across every major milestone, and what's specific to EcoBoost vs. naturally aspirated.
The Ford F-150 is America's best-selling vehicle for a reason, they're tough, capable, and with proper maintenance, they last forever. We have customers in Simi Valley driving F-150s well past 250,000 miles. The key is knowing what to service and when.
This guide covers F-150 trucks from 2009 onward, with notes on the differences between the various engine options. The basics apply across model years, but specific intervals vary slightly by engine type.
Engine Options Matter
Ford has offered several different engines in modern F-150s:
- 3.5L V6 (2011-2014, base): Naturally aspirated, simple, durable. Conservative maintenance.
- 5.0L V8 "Coyote": Robust naturally aspirated V8. Long-lived but heavy on oil.
- 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (2011+): Twin-turbo V6. Powerful but maintenance-sensitive.
- 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (2015+): Smaller twin-turbo. Generally reliable.
- 3.3L V6 (2018+): Replaced base 3.5L. Naturally aspirated, simpler maintenance.
- 3.0L Power Stroke Diesel (2018-2021): Different fluid intervals than gas engines.
- 3.5L PowerBoost Hybrid (2021+): Adds hybrid system maintenance considerations.
Every Oil Change (5,000-7,500 Miles)
Ford recommends synthetic oil with up to 10,000-mile intervals on most modern F-150s. In Simi Valley severe-service conditions, we recommend 5,000-7,500 miles. EcoBoost engines especially benefit from shorter intervals because the turbo system creates more heat and combustion byproducts.
- Synthetic oil and filter, $80-$140 (5W-30 for most engines, check your manual)
- Tire rotation
- Visual brake check
- Fluid level inspection
- Inspect engine air filter and cabin air filter
15,000-20,000 Miles
- Engine air filter, $30-$70. F-150 air filters are larger than car filters. Replace when visibly dirty.
- Cabin air filter, $30-$60.
- Tire alignment check, $90-$150. Hauling and towing accelerate alignment drift.
30,000 Miles
- Brake fluid flush, $100-$160. Especially important on trucks that tow.
- Differential fluid (4WD models), $90-$180 per differential. Front and rear differentials need attention.
- Transfer case fluid (4WD models), $90-$140.
- Comprehensive inspection, including ball joints, tie rods, U-joints, and exhaust hangers.
50,000-60,000 Miles
The first big service. EcoBoost engines especially benefit from attention here.
- Spark plugs, $200-$450. EcoBoost engines run hotter and may need plugs at 60,000-80,000 miles instead of the 100,000 most modern engines run.
- Coolant flush, $150-$220.
- Transmission fluid service (10R80, 6R80), $200-$400. Ford recommends fluid service at 150,000 miles on the schedule, but most experienced techs recommend 60,000-mile service for severe duty (towing, hauling, hot climates).
- Brake pads (front), $300-$500 if needed.
- Drive belt, $90-$180 if cracked.
- Battery, $200-$320 if load-test fails. Ford trucks often run two batteries on diesel models.
EcoBoost-Specific: Walnut Blasting (60,000-100,000 miles)
Direct-injection EcoBoost engines develop intake valve carbon deposits because there's no fuel washing over the back of the valves. Symptoms include rough idle, reduced power, and misfires at higher mileage. Walnut blasting (manually cleaning the valves with crushed walnut shells) is typically $400-$700 and dramatically improves performance.
The 2017+ F-150 EcoBoost engines added port injection in addition to direct injection, which significantly reduced this issue. But pre-2017 EcoBoost trucks should plan for this service.
90,000-100,000 Miles
- Spark plugs, if not done at 60K.
- Coolant flush, if not done at 60K.
- Transmission service, at minimum, if not done previously.
- Differential fluids, second service.
- Suspension inspection, F-150 ball joints, tie rods, and stabilizer links typically need attention by 100,000 miles.
- U-joints, Inspect for play. Typical replacement is $200-$500 per U-joint depending on access.
120,000-150,000 Miles
This is where F-150s start showing the cumulative effects of duty cycle:
- Front struts/rear shocks, $500-$1,200 for full set. F-150s with heavy hauling or towing duty wear faster.
- Wheel hub assemblies, $300-$600 per side if humming or rough. Common at this mileage.
- Lower ball joints, $300-$600 per side. Inspect for play.
- Spark plugs, third set due if you've kept the truck this long.
- Brake calipers, Sometimes need rebuilding or replacement after years of heat and salt exposure.
EcoBoost Turbocharger Considerations
Twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engines have specific concerns at higher mileage:
- Always let the engine idle 30-60 seconds before shutdown after hard driving, gives the turbos time to cool
- Use only Ford-spec synthetic oil with strict intervals
- Watch for boost leaks (often plastic charge pipes degrade), symptoms include reduced acceleration and check engine lights with codes P0299, P003A
- Wastegate actuator failures sometimes occur in 80,000-150,000 mile range
10R80 Transmission (2017+ F-150)
The 10-speed automatic is generally robust but maintenance-sensitive. Symptoms of trouble include:
- Harsh shifts, especially 1-2 and 2-3
- Shudder when accelerating from a stop
- Hesitation between gears
Fluid service at 60,000 miles (changing the fluid and filter, even though Ford says lifetime) is the single best thing you can do for a 10R80.
4WD/4x4 System Service
Trucks regularly used in 4WD need additional attention:
- Front differential, rear differential, and transfer case fluid changes every 50,000-60,000 miles
- Front axle U-joints and CV axles inspected at every oil change
- 4WD engagement actuators (IWE on F-150) sometimes fail and need replacement, symptom is grinding noise when shifting into 4WD
Towing and Hauling Adjustments
If your F-150 regularly tows trailers or hauls heavy loads:
- Cut all maintenance intervals roughly in half
- Watch transmission and oil temperatures closely
- Consider supplemental transmission cooling if not already equipped
- Inspect brake components more frequently, towing is hard on brakes
